Jerry Saltz begins his tenure at NY Magazine with a bang. His review of the High Times Hard Times show is aces and it's a sign of good things to come for both Jerry and the magazine. NY mag needed a different approach to contemporary art issues and now they have it. Like all good art writers Jerry brings us back to the present while examining the past. After talking about the shows strengths (experimentation, determination & rule breaking) and weaknesses(provincialism, fetishization & academization) he leaves us with food for thought..."The art in “High Times” isn’t better than the art being made today. It isn’t purer. But the show is rife with untapped painterly DNA. It is an amazing trip to a time and place when the market had nothing to do with history and art was guided only by artists acting on their own. So much so that some may feel their insurrectionary instincts stirring. " Henri is all for insurrectionary instincts stirring!
